Manfred Kirchheimer’s “Stations of the Elevated” opens Winter Season of Schnitzer Cinema

EUGENE, Ore. -- (January 31, 2017) – The 2016-17 Schnitzer Cinema will be devoted to the theme “In the Street,” with films that capture a range of subjects from street photography to Occupy Wall Street. Films are accompanied by guest speakers, in person or via Skype and continue monthly from February through May. Schnitzer Cinema is programmed by Richard Herskowitz, JSMA curator of media arts. Programs start at 7pm and include free refreshments, when held in the museum.

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art Welcomes Long-term Loan of Medieval Art from the Metropolitan Museum of Art

EUGENE, Ore. -- (January 10, 2017) – The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon campus has five objects from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection of medieval art on a two-year, renewable loan for the purposes of both public enjoyment and teaching. The objects --a reliquary, a censer, a diptych, a statuette, and a limestone sculpture of the Virgin Mary and Jesus--are on view in the museum’s John and Ethel MacKinnon Gallery of European Art.

Jill Hartz Appointed as Accreditation Commissioner for American Alliance of Museums

EUGENE, Ore. -- (December 12, 2016) –The Board of Directors of the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) has ratified the appointment of Jill Hartz as a new accreditation commissioner. Hartz is the executive director of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) at the University of Oregon in Eugene, a position she’s held since 2008.

Hartz begins her five-year term as accreditation commissioner in January 2017.

Celebrations Around the World are Part of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art’s Free Family Day

EUGENE, Ore. -- (November 22, 2016) - The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art invites families to spend a day at the museum enjoying free activities at “Celebrations Around the World” on Saturday, December 3, from noon to 3 p.m. on the University of Oregon campus. This free family day will be filled with art activities for children of all ages and will be inspired by celebrations and artistic traditions from around the world.

Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art Hosts “Cuba Ocho,” an Exhibition Focusing on Cuban Art and Identity

EUGENE, Ore. -- (October 27, 2016) – “Cuba Ocho,” an exhibition featuring work by seven contemporary Cuban artists that explore Cuban history through their provocative and politically charged works and a team of artists who created a stamp book about the revolution for children, is on view at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon campus. Organized by Jill Hartz, JSMA executive director, and Amelia Anderson, a second-year MA graduate student in art history, the exhibition is on view through February 19, 2017.

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art's celebration of Día de los Muertos is dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the publication "Don Quixote"

The free celebrations are open to the community and feature traditional ofrendas, dancing, poetry, music, and art activities.

EUGENE, Ore. -- (October 17, 2016) – This year's Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration returns to the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon campus for four days of activities on Saturday, October 29, Sunday, October 30, Tuesday, November 1, and Wednesday, November 2, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. each evening.

“Art of the Athlete” returns to the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art for the Fifth Year

EUGENE, Ore. -- (October 4, 2016) – The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art’s “Art of the Athlete” exhibition returns for a fifth year featuring work created by University of Oregon student athletes participating in football, volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s golf, and acro & tumbling. The exhibition remains on view through January 29, 2017.

The public is invited to a free reception, sponsored by Bank of America and Merrill Lynch, on Wednesday, October 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

“Gay Outlaw Mutable Object,” on view at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

EUGENE, Ore. -- (September 22, 2016) – “Gay Outlaw Mutable Object,” an exhibition featuring a variety of artistic disciplines created by San Francisco artist Gay Outlaw, is on view at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, on the University of Oregon campus through February 19, 2017

The exhibition, curated by Jill Hartz, JSMA executive director, will be celebrated at a reception on Friday, September 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. On October 1, 2016 at 2 p.m., Outlaw will give a talk focusing on her work.
