“Street” and “Pendulum,” Two Video Works from Artist James Nares on View at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

The exhibition opens with a special Schnitzer Cinema, “Motion Studies: The Films and Paintings of James Nares,” on Wednesday, May 10, at 7 p.m.

EUGENE, Ore. -- (April 26, 2017) – The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon opens “James Nares: Street and Pendulum” in its Artist Project Space. On view from May 10 to September 3, 2017, the exhibition, organized by Richard Herskowitz, JSMA’s curator of media arts, features two video works filmed by Nares in the streets of New York in two different eras.

Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art Hosts “Mírame Bien,” an Exhibition Featuring Portraits of Mexico from the 1920s and ‘30s

EUGENE, Ore. -- (June 2, 2017) – The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, located on the University of Oregon campus, presents the exhibition “Mírame Bien: Portraits of Mexico by Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Paul Strand, and Edward Weston,” on view from June 7, 2017, to January 21, 2018.

The exhibition offers an intimate look at the work of three master photographers in Mexico in the 1920s and ‘30s. “Mírame Bien,” which means “Take a Good Look at Me,” investigates the shifting identities of “insider” and “outsider” roles affecting images of people, places and things.

New $2.25 million gift supports contemporary art at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

EUGENE, Ore. -- (March 30, 2017) – An anonymous gift of nearly $2.25 million will create the Hartz FUNd for Contemporary Art at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) at the University of Oregon. The largest endowment to date for the JSMA, it will transform the museum’s ability to explore and support the work of local, national, and international contemporary artists through exhibitions, acquisitions, publications, and more.

Artist Kent Rush Discusses his Work--Creating Art at the Intersection of Photography and Printing at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

EUGENE, Ore. -- (April 3, 2017) – On Wednesday April,12, at 5:30 p.m., artist Kent Rush will discuss his process of experimentation and how his art operates at the intersection of printmaking and photography. The artist’s talk, which is free and open to the public, will be held at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon campus. In addition to his talk, Rush is teaching a one-week intensive lithography workshop for the University of Oregon Department of Art. “Same Streets, Different Worlds” featuring a Skype Q&A with filmmaker Jem Cohen is at the April Schnitzer Cinema

EUGENE, Ore. -- (March 29, 2017) – The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art continues this year’s Schnitzer Cinema “In The Street” series on Wednesday, April 12, at 7 p.m. with “Same Streets, Different Worlds” featuring a Skype Q&A with filmmaker Jem Cohen. Two short street films, “NYC Weights and Measures” and “Little Flags,” along with a selection of episodes from “Gravity Hills Newsreels” on Occupy Wall Street will be screened. Schnitzer Cinema is programmed by Richard Herskowitz, JSMA curator of media arts. The program is free and includes refreshments.

The Bernie Madoff Scandal is Subject of Performance Art and Panel Discussion

EUGENE, Ore. -- (February 17, 2017) – The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art continues this year’s Schnitzer Cinema “In The Street” series on Wednesday, March 8, at 7 p.m. with “A Kaddish for Bernie Madoff,” a live musical theater and media performance by Portland artist Alicia Jo Rabins. This performance will be held in the Redwood Auditorium, in the Erb Memorial Union, located on the University of Oregon campus.
