EUGENE, Ore. -- (May 9, 2019) – “Passage,” a three channel video installation by South African artist Mohau Modisakeng, will be on view at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon campus from May 11 to August 9, 2019. Originally presented at the 2017 Venice Biennale, “Passage” offers a meditation on slavery’s dismemberment of African identity and its enduring erasure of personal histories.

Basquiat Scholar to Speak at University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art
EUGENE, Ore. -- (April 2, 2019) –Fred Hoffman, the preeminent scholar on Jean-Michel Basquiat, will discuss the significance of Basquiat’s head imagery in a lecture on Wednesday, April 17, at 5:30 p.m. at the University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.
“We are excited to bring Mr. Hoffman to the university,” says Jill Hartz, JSMA’s executive director. “The museum is fortunate to be able to show a number of Basquiat works over the past few years, and we will benefit from learning more about this artist and his unique style.”
The Best Short Films from the 2019 Ashland Independent Film Festival Screened at Schnitzer Cinema
EUGENE, Ore. -- (April 23, 2019) – On Wednesday, May 8 at 7 p.m., Schnitzer Cinema continues this year’s series with Short Films from the 2019 Ashland Independent Film Festival. The screening includes “Men of Vision”, “Miller and Son”, “Dust Devil”, and “Forest on Fire”. The program is free and includes refreshments.

EUGENE, Ore. -- (April 9, 2019) – The University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art presents the world premiere of “Philip Haas: Sculpture Breathes Life into Painting & Music,” a two-week performance installation that incorporates motorized sculpture, construction, totems, altered found objects, film, fetishized costume, movement, sound, spoken word, and music. On view May 29 – June 9, 2019, the installation will embark on a year-long tour in the U.S. and abroad following its debut.

Featuring a selection of some of the most iconic images that symbolize the ideals of the Cuban Revolution, the exhibition is on view through Sunday, July 21, 2019.

This year’s theme, “Protecting the Northwest’s Natural Beauty,” examines the roles people have in caring for the environment and recognizing the collective responsibility to preserve the quality and safekeeping of the land, air, water, plants, and animals.

The documentary takes viewers into the world of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where Christians and drag queens share the spotlight.
A Half Century of Peruvian Photography Explores a City and a Culture at the University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art
EUGENE, Ore. -- (February 14, 2019) – The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, located on the University of Oregon campus, explores Peru with a new exhibition “Qosqo, entre el pasado y el presente: Photography in Cusco 1895-1945.” Featuring the works of nine photographers, who lived in the Cusco region, the exhibition offers a portrait of a city and a culture at the dawn of the modern era. On view from February 16 to May 19, 2019, the exhibition was co-curated by Adelma Benavente García and Peter Yenne, founders of the Photographic Archive Project.
