Celebrate the 38th Annual Día de los Muertos Celebration at the University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

EUGENE, Ore. -- (October 23, 2018) – This year’s Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration returns to the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon campus on Friday, November 1 and Saturday, November 2 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. each evening. Guest are invited to join a processional at 5:30 p.m. at the EMU amphitheater to journey to the museum together.

New director named for the University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

EUGENE, Ore. -- (July 1, 2019) - John Weber, the founding director of the University of California Santa Cruz Institute of the Arts and Sciences, will be the next executive director for the University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.
Weber is set to join the museum staff Oct. 1 and will replace Jill Hartz, who announced her retirement last fall.
As the Santa Cruz institute’s founding director, Weber has a solid history working in both academic and public art museums, said Scott Pratt, UO’s executive vice provost.

EUGENE, Ore. -- (May 9, 2019) – “Passage,” a three channel video installation by South African artist Mohau Modisakeng, will be on view at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon campus from May 11 to August 9, 2019. Originally presented at the 2017 Venice Biennale, “Passage” offers a meditation on slavery’s dismemberment of African identity and its enduring erasure of personal histories.

Basquiat Scholar to Speak at University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

EUGENE, Ore. -- (April 2, 2019) –Fred Hoffman, the preeminent scholar on Jean-Michel Basquiat, will discuss the significance of Basquiat’s head imagery in a lecture on Wednesday, April 17, at 5:30 p.m. at the University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.

“We are excited to bring Mr. Hoffman to the university,” says Jill Hartz, JSMA’s executive director. “The museum is fortunate to be able to show a number of Basquiat works over the past few years, and we will benefit from learning more about this artist and his unique style.”

World premiere of performance installation by artist Philip Haas opens at the University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

EUGENE, Ore. -- (April 9, 2019) – The University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art presents the world premiere of “Philip Haas: Sculpture Breathes Life into Painting & Music,” a two-week performance installation that incorporates motorized sculpture, construction, totems, altered found objects, film, fetishized costume, movement, sound, spoken word, and music. On view May 29 – June 9, 2019, the installation will embark on a year-long tour in the U.S. and abroad following its debut.

The University of Oregon's Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is a premier Pacific Northwest museum for exhibitions and collections of historic and contemporary art.
