Free Family Day at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art Explores the Art of Storytelling and Native American Crafts

EUGENE, Ore. -- (May 5, 2015) – The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art invites families to spend a day at the museum enjoying free activities at Storytelling through Art on Saturday, May 16, from noon to 3 p.m. Sponsored by Kendall Auto Group, the free event is inspired by the exhibition “Rick Bartow: Things You Know But Cannot Explain.”

Art activities include quilt making with local arts educator and author Linda Clare, creating mixed-media bird sculptures and illustrated storytelling.  Special guests from the Cascades Raptor Center will be on view in the JSMA’s north courtyard throughout the event.

Performances, scheduled throughout the day, include traditional stories of the Kalapuya Tribe with Esther Stutzman, story time with Cynthia Olsen from the Eugene Public Library and the JSMA’s Dragon Puppet Theatre will perform “Raven and Petrel.”  Family-friendly museums tours will be offered in English and Spanish.

“This is a great opportunity for families to create art together, explore the galleries, enjoy performances, and learn about the connection between storytelling and art,” says Arthurina Fears, Manager of Museum Education Programs.
