The museum’s collection of metalwork originated with Gertrude Bass Warner’s founding donation of art from China, Japan, and Korea, which includes significant works regularly on view in the JSMA’s Betty and John Soreng Gallery of the arts of China. In 2014, distinguished University of Oregon alum Margo Grant Walsh donated over 700 modern works to the JSMA, significantly expanding the museum's holding to include fine examples of Modernist and Arts and Crafts objects, among others. The Margo Grant Walsh Collection of 20th Century Silver and Metalwork has formed the core of a number of special exhibitions, including The First Metal: Art and Crafts Copper, and Clara Barck Welles: Inspiration and Influence in Arts and Crafts Silver.
