Art of the Athlete II

August 31, 2013 to February 09, 2014

Building on last year’s collaboration with the John E. Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes and the UO Department of Arts and Administration, this year’s show features work created by UO student athletes from a variety of sports: football, soccer, men’s and women’s golf, track and field, cheerleading, men’s and women’s basketball. Students spent the spring term in workshops with JSMA educators twice a week, experimenting with mixed media, graphic design, and self-portraits. Many of the athletes also used the studio session to create paintings depicting a fellow student athlete and tennis player, Alex Rovello, who drowned in May 2013.

Reflecting on last year’s experience, Steve Stolp, Executive Director, Services for Student-Athletes of Academic Support, said, “It was by far the most significant project that immersed our student-athletes into the university community. Most of the students divide their time between classes, tutor sessions, practices, and meals and this exhibition and program introduced them to the incredible resources at the art museum.”
