Dance Photography Exhibition “Strike a Pose” Now on View at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

EUGENE, Ore. -- (February 22, 2016) –  The exhibition “Strike a Pose” is on view at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon campus from now until June 5, 2016. This exhibition, drawn from the JSMA’s collection of photography, features images that capture a variety of styles of dance, including African, Indian, jazz, modern and ballet.

On Friday, March 4, at 12 p.m., students from the University of Oregon’s School of Music and Dance will perform dances informed by the choreography of Pearl Primus, introduced by Jenifer Craig, Chair, Department of Dance. This program is part of the JSMA’s new lunchtime lecture series, “The Hidden Histories of Art.”

“Strike a Pose” features many of the images that were incorporated in the JSMA’s 1963 exhibition “Dance in Art,” which showcased photographers and dancers professionally active in the United States in the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s. Wallace Baldinger, the museum director at the time, later sought to acquire many of the works to add to the museum’s growing photography collection.
