Free Family Day at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art Celebrates the Lunar New Year

EUGENE, Ore. -- (January 29, 2016) – Celebrate the Lunar New Year, an important holiday in many parts of Asia, with a free family day of art activities and learning experiences at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon on Saturday, February 6, from noon to 3 p.m.

 

“Our free family days encourage exploration and hand-on learning for visitors of all ages,” says Lisa Abia-Smith, JSMA Director of Education.  “Families can explore a range of art activities inspired by traditional and contemporary Asian art forms as well as enjoy performances, and tours.”

 

Art activities include Calligraphy with Helen Liu, manga with Marianne Walker, kite making with Go Ga Yeon, brush painting demonstration with Qian Liu, and animal zodiacs with Global Perspectives for Youth. In conjunction with JSMA’s exhibition of “First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare, on tour from the Folger Shakespeare Library,” visitors will also enjoy an art activity focused on Shakespeare and Japanese playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon with the River Road Park Imagination Bus.

 

Performances throughout the day include fan dancing with the Korean Central Church Dancing Group, “The Dragon and the Phoenix” with the JSMA Dragon Puppet Theatre, story time with the Springfield Public Library, dance and Taiko with Yujin Gakuen Elementary fifth graders, and Guzheng musical performance by Yunshu Huang. Family-friendly museum tours will be offered in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and English and Megumi Unno ends the day with a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

 

Family Day is co-sponsored by the US Bank Foundation, the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies, Confucius Institute, Imagination International and “First Folio! The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare, on tour from the Folger Shakespeare Library” are made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor, and by the generous support of Google.org and Vinton and Sigrid Cerif.

About the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

The University of Oregon's Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is a premier Pacific Northwest museum for exhibitions and collections of historic and contemporary art based in a major university setting. The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is located on the University of Oregon campus at 1430 Johnson Lane. Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens. Free admission is given to ages 18 and under, JSMA members, college students with ID, and University of Oregon faculty, staff and students.
