“Ausencias,” translated Absences, is on view at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art through August 16, 2015
EUGENE, Ore. -- (April 30, 2015) – In the exhibition “Ausencias,” Argentine photographer Gustavo Germano restages snapshots of Brazilian and Argentine families whose loved ones are among the “disappeared,” people who were tortured and murdered by dictatorial regimes in South America from the 1960s to 1980s. On view through August 16, 2015, the installation includes four diptychs of original and recreated photographs, with one or more of the original subjects missing.
Each pair of images is a powerful statement of pain, suffering, and loss evoking the photographer’s personal connection to the issue. The exhibition includes a childhood image of the photographer’s own family, taken in 1969, and then carefully recreated more thirty years after the disappearance of his brother Eduardo. Abducted at the age of 18 in Rosario, Argentina, the remains of Eduardo Germano were just recovered last year.<>
On Wednesday, May 13, the Bartolomé de las Casas Lecture in Latin American Studies presents a talk with the artist, “A Photographic Memory: Seeing the Disappeared” at 7 p.m. at 182 Lillis Hall on the University of Oregon campus.
The exhibition is made possible through a JSMA Academic Support Grant to support several courses in Latin American Studies and is organized by Professor Monique Rodrigues Balbuena, Associate Professor of Literature in the Robert D. Clark Honors College and Program Director for Latin American Studies. The exhibition is sponsored by the Oregon Humanities Center’s Endowment for Public Outreach in the Arts, Sciences, and Humanities.
