Remarks will be provided by University of Oregon interim President Scott Coltrane, JSMA Executive Director Jill Hartz, Mayor of Newport Sandra Roumagoux, Charles Froelick of Froelick Gallery, and Rick Bartow; prayer by artist  Frank LaPena. Singers from the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians will perform in the artist’s honor.

$60 for registered Lane and UO students / $200 community at large
Day 1 includes students making and printing their own drypoint prints. Hiroshoma will advise about paper handling. Participants are encouraged to bring in their most challenging papers. Day 2 includes instruction in monotype printing. Bartow and Hiroshima have a fluid, elegant working dynamic that is a joy to observe. Students will work with Hiroshima and Bartow in learning mixing inks, paper handling, press techniques, and discuss the subtleties of collaboration in printmaking. FAMILY DAY: Storytelling through Art
Saturday, May 16, 12 p.m.–3 p.m.
This free family event is inspired by renowned Northwest artist Rick Bartow and Things You Know But Cannot Explain. Enjoy art activities and performances by Oregon artists and arts organizations and learn about the art of storytelling and Native American crafts. With a healing arts component, local arts educator and author Linda Clare will lead a quilt-making activity and will explain how quilts and blankets provide comfort. Storyteller Esther Stutzman, a member of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz, will share traditional stories of the local Kalapuya tribe and the life lessons they reveal. Music, a major part of storytelling, will be featured in a hand drum demonstration of songs. Enjoy a visit from Cascades Raptor Center, story time with Cynthia Olsen from the Eugene Public Library, and a performance of Raven and Petrel, a Northwest Native American tale, by the JSMA Dragon Puppet Theatre. Panel discussion exploring the role of art-making in recovery from trauma and in promoting healing with Dr. Patricia Dewey Lambert, Program Director, UO Arts and Administration Program, and Coordinator, Arts in Healthcare Management Concentration; Sara McDonough, LMFT and ATR-BC; Eliza Murphy, writer and healthcare professional; and David Reese, graduate student in Philosophy and Women’s and Gender Studies, UO. Moderated by Lisa Abia-Smith, Director of Education, JSMA.
