Be Our Guest: Thanksgiving Weekend Open House at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

Free admission November 30 – December 1, 2013.

EUGENE, Ore. -- (November 7, 2013) –  Add an element of culture to this year’s festivities and explore the galleries at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon campus with free admission during the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Open Friday, November 29 - Sunday December 1 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the JSMA is located at 1430 Johnson Lane. The museum will close early on Wednesday, November 26 at 5 p.m. Free parking is available behind the museum for our guests.

Visitors can explore “National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West,” a special exhibition of photography from close to home that displays spectacular faces, the cowboy life, and changing uses of the land in more than 70 works from the National Geographic archive. Another look at photography includes “Korda and the Revolutionary Image,” by  Cuban artist Alberto Korda.  An important photographer of the Cuban Revolution, Korda took the iconic image of Che, which is present in this exhibiton, along with images of Castro, Nerudo, and Sartre.

New on view in the Preble/Murphy Gallery of Japanese Art, “Art of Traditional Japanese Theater” highlights fourteenth-century Nō theater and its comic counterpart, Kyōgen, which evolved from earlier dramatic and musical performance traditions to become the medieval dance-drama of Japan’s warrior class. This rotation features prints by Tsukioka Kōgyo and others documenting performances of this subtle, elegant art, along with paintings, books, theatrical properties and netsuke toggles.

“Ave Maria: Marian Devotional Works from Easter and Western Christendom,” in our McKenzie Gallery,  explores the iconography of the Virgin Mary since the late Middle Ages throughout the Netherlands, Italy, Russia, Yugoslavia and Greece. In the MacKinnon Gallery, “Transatlanticism” supports Iberian and Latin American Transatlantic Studies with a selection of works by such important modern and contemporary masters as Roberto Matta, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso and Rufino Tamayo.

In the Artist Project Space, “From Last Century,”a three-part video installation by artist Song Tao,   humorously and poetically engages the dynamic cityscape of Shanghai, China’s largest metropolis. The artist and his cast transform public wastebaskets, crowded bus stops, wide boulevards, and sprawling high rises into spaces of play and personal reflection dealing with themes of modernization and alienation. “Art of the Athlete II,” in our Education Corridor, showcases works from UO athletes from a variety of sports in collaboration with the John E. Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes and the UO Department of Arts and Administration.

The Museum Store and Marché Museum Café will also be open during the weekend.
