Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art Hosts “Mírame Bien,” an Exhibition Featuring Portraits of Mexico from the 1920s and ‘30s

EUGENE, Ore. -- (June 2, 2017) –  The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, located on the University of Oregon campus, presents the exhibition “Mírame Bien: Portraits of Mexico by Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Paul Strand, and Edward Weston,” on view from June 7, 2017, to January 21, 2018.

The exhibition offers an intimate look at the work of three master photographers in Mexico in the 1920s and ‘30s. “Mírame Bien,” which means “Take a Good Look at Me,” investigates the shifting identities of “insider” and “outsider” roles affecting images of people, places and things.

Attracted to the cultural renaissance happening in post-revolutionary Mexico, American artists Edward Weston and Paul Strand traveled south for new beginnings and artistic inspiration. While in Mexico City, they met Manuel Álvarez Bravo, and their interactions together helped shape the way they saw and captured the world around them.

Organized by Cheryl Hartup, Associate Curator of Academic Programs and Latin American Art, “Mírame Bien” is a continuation of the topics explored in the current exhibitions of “Cuba Ocho” and “Diálogos,” both of which explore the museum’s growing collection of art from Latin American and the Caribbean.

“Like ‘Cuba Ocho’ and ‘Diálogos,’ the works in ‘Mírame Bien’ fuse the present and the past, the specific and the infinite,” says Hartup. “They explore internal and external perceptions and emphasize the importance of cross-cultural exchanges.”

“Mírame Bien” features ten works from the JSMA’s collection, including gelatin silver prints by Weston, platinum prints by Álvarez Bravo, and a selection of photogravures from Strand’s “The Mexican Portfolio,” a recent museum acquisition.
