The exhibition, on view from June 1 to September 1, includes tours with local art collectors
EUGENE, Ore. -- (May 13, 2013) The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon campus commemorates 80 years with a new exhibition, “Living Legacies: The JSMA @ 80.” This exhibition celebrates the collectors and collections in the community that reflect the JSMA’s vision for the future. On view June 1 – September 1 in the Coeta and Donald Barker Changing Exhibitions Gallery, as well as other gallery spaces, the exhibition is accompanied by the museum’s first online catalog.
“Living Legacies: The JSMA @ 80” opens with a free, public reception on Friday, May 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. A members-only reception will be held 5-6 p.m.
Featuring more than 250 works on loan from more than 80 collectors , the art on view reflects the museum’s own collecting strengths in Asian, Pacific Northwest, and American art as well as works that reflect the JSMA’s recently expanded collecting mission in the areas of European and Latin American art. In addition, Aboriginal, African, and Middle Eastern art, Silver Age American comics, and musical instruments reflect the breadth of collections in our community.
““Living Legacies: The JSMA @ 80” is probably one of the most unusual shows we’ve curated at the museum,” says Jill Hartz, JSMA executive director. “We’ve never had an exhibition drawn from so many lenders, nor have we – or our community – seen these works, mostly from private homes, on public view.”
In 2008, the JSMA presented “Lasting Legacies,” which celebrated the museum’s 75th anniversary, by featuring exceptional pieces from the collection and the museum’s founder and donors who made the JSMA what it had become to that date. Having honored the past at that juncture, the current “Living Legacies” exhibition is intended to both celebrate our community and to look to the future by showing how the museum’s collections have grown over the past five years.
Among the artists included in “Living Legacies” are Josef Albers, Jay Backstrand, Alexander Calder, Charles Heaney, Ishikawa Toraji, Manuel Izquierdo, Jung Do-Jun, Elizabeth Keith, Ellsworth Kelly, Kim Yikyung, Roy Lichtenstein, David McCosh, Cirenaica Moreira, Mori Yoshitoshi, Carl Morris, Lucinda Parker, Pablo Picasso, C.S. Price, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Frank Stella, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, Utagawa Hiroshige, Wang Gongyi Andy Warhol, Edward Weston, James A. McNeil Whistler, and Jamie Wyeth.
The public is invited to join gallery tours by collectors whose works are featured in “Living Legacies.” On Saturday, June 8, Lee Michels, Richard and Christine Sundt, and Sharon Ungerleider will discuss their work; Saturday, June 15, features Keith Achepohl, Greg Fitz-Gerald, and James Walker; and Saturday, July 20, features Terry and Anne Carter, David Hilton, and Joyce Leader. All collectors’ tours begin at 2 p.m.
In addition to the tours, visitors can hear collectors discuss their works on videos and in Guide by Cell audios tours located throughout the museum. The JSMA’s first online interactive catalog will be released following the opening of the exhibition and will feature most of the works in the exhibition.
Also planned in conjunction with the show is a SmART Collecting Series, sponsored by MCS Family Wealth Advisors, a series of programs offering collectors and would-be collectors stimulating and practical information to guide and inspire their collecting practice. The series begin with “The Passion of Collecting,” a lecture with Associate Professor James Harper on Wednesday, June 5. On Wednesday, June 19, “Collecting and Connoisseurship,” with panelists Laura Paulson, Vice President, Christie’s; Pablo Schugurensky, Meta Arte; H. P. Lin, White Lotus Gallery; Karin Clarke, Schrager & Clarke Gallery; collector Roger Saydack; and JSMA curators Anne Rose Kitagawa and Danielle Knapp; and moderated by JSMA executive director Jill Hartz. “The The Feeding and Care of Collections” on Wednesday, June 26, features panelists Sven Bruntjen, ASA appraiser; Chris White, JSMA collections manager; Dom Vetri, professor, UO Law School; and David Gant, senior director, UO’s Gift Planning office; and moderated by JSMA chief curator Anne Rose Kitagawa. The series ends on Wednesday, July 31, with a conversation with Kimerly Rorschach, Director, Seattle Art Museum, and Jill Hartz, JSMA Executive Director on “Collecting for the University Art Museum.” All programs begin at 5:30 p.m.
Complementing this special exhibition are “JSMA @ 80” works, all acquired in the past five years, which are installed throughout the museum. In addition, the Soreng Gallery features “Order (The Red Guards),” a work from the 2011 exhibition “Xiaoze Xie: Amplified Moments (1993-2008).” Xiaoze Xie is one of China’s most prominent contemporary artists and is currently the Paul L. and Phyllis Wattis Professor of Art at Stanford University. As a permanent marker of the JSMA’s 80th anniversary, the museum invites the public to help it acquire this work for the collection.
