Schnitzer Cinema: Free Radicals: A History of Experimental Film

Wed, 10/08/2014 - 7:00pm to 9:00pm

The 2014-15 season of the Schnitzer Cinema, curated by Cinema Pacific director Richard Herskowitz, is devoted to American experimental media, with a special emphasis on the history of American avant-garde film.  The first screening of the season is Free Radicals: A History of Experimental Film (France, 2010, 82 minutes).

Avant-garde filmmaker Pip Chodorov’s affectionate overview of some of the leading figures of 20th century experimental film combines extensive film clips with conversations with such luminaries as Hans Richter, Robert Breer, Michael Snow and Stan Brakhage.  The personal tales of the filmmakers (such as Ken Jacobs’ memories of dumpster diving), and Chodorov’s exploration of the immigrant backgrounds of artists like Jonas Mekas, give a strong sense of the sociohistorical and artistic contexts of classic avant-garde films.

Schnitzer Cinema screenings are free and include free popcorn and soda and are brought to you in partnership with Cinema Pacific and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.

Join us for upcoming programs in the series: Harry Smith's Heaven and Earth Magic: Expanded Cinema Version projected by Dennis Nyback on November 5 at 7 pm and the Video Art of Julia Oldham on November 19 at 7 pm.
