RICK BARTOW (American, Mad River Wiyot, 1946-2016)
Rick Bartow, one of the United States’s most prominent contemporary Native American artists, was born in Newport, Oregon, and made his home there until his death from congestive heart failure in 2016. He was a member of the Wiyot Tribe of Northern California and had close ties with the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians. He was an incredibly prolific painter, sculptor, and printmaker. His art, though deeply personal, spoke to universal experiences and globally minded themes. Bartow’s work is permanently held in more than 60 public institutions in the United States, including a major commission at The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, and has been featured in many solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally. In 2015, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art organized the traveling retrospective exhibition Rick Bartow: Things You Know But Cannot Explain.
