University of Oregon Graduate Student Curates War Exhibition at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

EUGENE, Ore. -- (Mary 26, 2016) - The exhibition “The Face of War: Gabor Peterdi and his Contemporaries” will run from June 11 to October 9, 2016, at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon Campus.

Featuring prints from Hungarian-American printmaker Gabor Peterdi (1915–2001) and three of his contemporaries: American artists Kerr Eby (1890–1946), John Sloan (1871–1951) and Joseph Pennell (1857–1926), the exhibition explores the artistic representation of the anxieties, fears, and turmoil brought on from the two World Wars.

Chyna Bounds, a graduate student in the Department of the History of Art and Architecture, curated the exhibition, under the guidance of Senior Curator of Western Art Johanna G. Seasonwein. Bounds will give a curator’s talk on Friday, June 12, at 12 p.m. The talk is free and open to the public.

“It was a great opportunity to curate this exhibition since war is an ever-prevalent theme, and artists are constantly reacting to it,” says Bounds. “I think the prints included in 'The Face of War’ are exemplary because as a group they really touch on all facets of war life. They detail the production of ammunition, the isolation of soldiers, the psychological and physical damages of battle, and the glorification of the military uniform.”

“The Face of War: Gabor Peterdi and his Contemporaries” features works from the collection of Elizabeth D. Moyer, Ph.D., and Michael C. Powanda, Ph.D, of the KMP Collection, as well as works in the collection of the JSMA, and is made possible with support from Drs. Moyer and Powanda.
