Queer Cinema is the Focus of Schnitzer Cinema’s Queer Productions Series

The film series has expanded to included screenings to Downtown Eugene’s Wayward Lamb

EUGENE, Ore. -- (February 4, 2016) – Schnitzer Cinema, the JSMA’s annual film series, showcases queer cinema as part of the year-long program “Queer Productions.” Supported by the English Department and the College of Arts and Sciences, “Queer Productions” includes film screenings at The Wayward Lamb, classes, guest artists and scholars, a symposium, and the exhibition “Relationship” by Zachary Drucker and Rhys Ernst.  Programmed by Richard Herskowitz, director of Cinema Pacific and JSMA Curator of Media Arts, with the help of Professor Quinn Miller, all events are free.

The winter/spring season of Schnitzer Cinema opens on February 10 with “Tender Fictions,” including a Skype discussion with Barbara Hammer at 7 p.m. at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. Hammer, an acclaimed pioneer of queer cinema, has produced more than 75 works, including early lesbian avant-garde films that continue to influence a new generation of artists. Most recently, Hammer was honored with a retrospective of her films at MoMA (New York, 2010) and the Tate Modern (London, 2012).

Innovative, funny, and historic, “Tender Fictions” is an autobiographical exploration of the search for and meaning of gay community, featuring a rich montage of home movies, experimental films, news footage, and personal photographs. Hammer’s “Maya Deren’s Sink” will be screened as well, and that film explores Deren’s concepts of space, time, and form through visits and projections filmed in her L.A. and New York homes.

On February 11, “Welcome to this House” will be shown in the museum at 2 p.m., with an additional Skyped talk with Barbara Hammer (2015) is a feature documentary film on the homes and loves of poet Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979), about life in the shadows, and the anxiety of art making without full self-disclosure. Hammer filmed in Bishop’s ‘best loved homes’ in the U.S., Canada, and Brazil believing that buildings and landscapes bear cultural memories. Interviews with poets, friends, and scholars provide “missing documents” of numerous female lovers.

Additionally, a Queer Film series will be held at the Wayward Lamb (150 West Broadway), starting February 9, at 7 p.m, with Cheryl Dunye’s film “The Watermelon Woman.” Dunye’s film explores thematic issues of historical investigation, self-discovery, romance, racial identity, and interpersonal relationships.
