Experience the entrancing world of art through your child’s excited eyes and growing skills! This class presents the fundamentals of art through a variety of media, while developing pre-schoolers’ social, motor, and communication skills. Emphasis is placed on familiarizing children with safe and proper use of art making tools, inspiring them to talk about art on guided gallery mini-tours and while creating their own art, and preparing them to transition into kindergarten by learning basic classroom conduct.

AFTER SCHOOL ART CLASS: ART EXPLORERS OF THE AMAZON

Explore the Amazon rain forests of Peru and the wild forces of nature! In this class we’ll learn about nature and ecosystems while having fun making art. Projects include eco-friendly earthworks, sculptures of giant bugs from the Amazon and collages inspired by the photographs of National Geographic photographer Sam Abell.

ENCAUSTIC WORKSHOP

Learn about the history and basic techniques used to create art with encaustics. The workshop will teach you how to make your own encaustic medium using oil paints for pigmentation and how to handle the warm waxy paint. We will have an overview of techniques involving painting, layering, incising, and most important, fusing the wax to the support. We will also examine some of the unique collage and mixed media opportunities that encaustic offers by adding paper, natural materials and image transfers to the wax. Students will be given time to experiment with their own ideas using the various techniques and are encouraged to bring materials of their own to use for collage. MASTER CLASS: PHOTOGRAPHY CRITIQUE WITH SAM ABELL AND TORBEN NISSEN

The workshop will be divided into two primary segments. During the first segment, Sam and Torben will talk about their own styles of photography and technical approaches. In the second part of the workshop, each of the 18 participants will have the opportunity to present 10 examples of their own work, and Sam and Torben will critique work in the context of his/their own photographic style. WORKSHOP: TEXT SHAPES AND/IN BOOK SPACES

This workshop will be an adrenaline exercise in creating a text-based book from collaged and found materials. The challenge will be to make the book spaces speak as well as part of the language, and to use the visual and graphical features of type as part of the meaning and effect of the text. Using the upcoming exhibition One Step Big Shot as an inspiration, students will look at the art and film of Andy Warhol and Gus Van Sant, who both used Polaroids in their creative process. We will experiment with the techniques of printmaking, collage, and photography and participants will celebrate their own fifteen minutes of fame.

A WALK ALONG THE WILLAMETTE RIVER WITH WILLIAM SULLIVAN
Saturday, April 24, 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Celebrate Earth Day and connect to the Amazonia exhibition by going on a nature walk with foremost Oregon nature guide William Sullivan. Meet at the museum for a guided tour of Amazonia at 11 a.m., then ride the EmX to Springfield's Island Park on the Willamette River, for lunch at 12:30 p.m. before walking back to campus along the riverside bike path, 2 1/2 miles to the Museum.
