NEW! Wednesday Workshop Series for High
School Students

Is
your teen looking for art instruction this summer? This weeknight workshop
series will introduce or enhance the students’ knowledge of drawing and design,
alternative photo processes, and collage and ‘zine culture. The first
session will focus on the principles of drawing, design, and typography, the
elements that make up digital and printed materials. The following workshop
will focus on various photographic processes including Polaroid image transfers
and multi-shot toy cameras. The final workshop of the series will combine both
into an experience with collage and ‘zine making.
SUMMER ART CAMP 2012
Jordan
Schnitzer Art Museum will offer seven sessions of Summer Camp 2012 for children
grades 1st-8th in the Museum’s art studio.
Camps are offered for full day, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or for half
day from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. (morning session) or 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
(afternoon session).

art supplies are provided with registration fees.
Students
need to provide their own lunches and snacks for break time. There is one snack

Care:
Optional after care is available at a weekly rate for those campers who wish to
remain late. After Care extends from 12:00-1:00 for morning sessions and from
4:00-5:00pm for afternoon sessions or full day camps. Cost is $25 per week.
Regular
visits to the Museum’s galleries are integral to the curriculum. Art projects
in a variety of media will be explored.

“Adventures with Animals in Art”

in art can be found throughout the ages.
Spend this week finding animals in paintings, ceramics, photographs, and
textiles. Create works of art
illustrating your favorite animals- real or imaginary.
Week 2: July 9 – July 13
“Design, Build, Go!”

Legos
will be one of the materials used in this camp for children to explore building
sculptures and structures. Explore the
process of designing your favorite city, a sleek car, or a mythical creature.
“Comics, Cartoons, and Creativity!”

What
are the elements of a comic? How do artists create stories through visual
imagery? Explore film, comics from Japan and the United States and create your
own series, strips, and comic books.
Creative writing and creative minds collide during this week. Elementary
students and middle school students will work in divided groups in order to
accommodate a range of developmentally appropriate activities.
Week 3: July 16 – July 20*
“Product Design, Producing Design”
Grades
1-5, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., $100
This
camp will introduce students to the elements of design and inspire them to
design a range of design products. This will include designing a dynamic
running shoe, building a green design home, or a creating a chair influenced by
Henry Bertoia or Ray and Charles Eames.
“Artist Olympics: Inspired by the 2012
Summer Olympics and the Ancient Art of Greece”
Grades
1-5, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., $100
Art
and athletics collide as we celebrate the 2012 Summer Olympics. Inspired by the
ancient traditions of Greece, students will create their own toga and crown,
craft their own Olympic medal, and use clay to explore the ancient art and
architecture of Greece.
Week 4: July 23 – July 27*
“Cowgirls, Cowboys, and the Art of the
West”
Grades
1-5, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., $100
Explore
the west through the arts! Students will find inspiration in the landscapes,
animals, and people of the west featured in the exhibition Tough by Nature by
Lynda Lanker and artists Deborah Butterfield and Charles Russell. Projects
include sketching and sculpting horses, creating a metallic belt buckle, and
drawing landscapes with pastels and charcoal.
“Next Stop Nature”
Grades
1-5, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., $100
How do
artists create? What inspires them? Using the museum’s collection of artists
such as Morris Graves and current exhibitions, students will set up their own
studio in the museum and begin to create.
Supervised walks around campus and a sneak peak at the museum’s
collections, will allow the young artists to begin making masterpieces.
Week 5: July 30 – August 3*
“Dragons on Parade”
Grades
1-5, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., $100
Celebrate
the year of the dragon in this fun-filled art camp. Inspired by the many
dragons in the museum’s collection, students will explore the myth of the
dragon and create wearable art including their own Chinese robe. This art camp
will end in a parade, complete with a 20-foot dragon that students will help
construct throughout the week.
“Snapshot! Photography 101”
Grades
6-8, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., $100
Experiment
with photography and film with a professional photographer, filmmaker, and
instructor. Students will be exposed to
a variety of ways to capture an image and experiment with film. Activities
include making sun prints, using a pinhole camera, and a tour of a darkroom.
Week 6: August 13 – August 17
“Playing with People, Portraits, and
Places”
Grades
1-5, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., $200
Examine
how artists for centuries have created works of art depicting the face and
human figure. Creative drama exploring
characters illustrated through art will be the highlight in this camp.
Week 7: August 20 – August 24
“Art + Architecture + Design”
Grades
4-8, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., $200
Where
does art meet architecture? How does the design process shape the product or
space? Discover how architects use the creative process to make artistic spaces
and interiors. Campers will also have
the opportunity to explore the UO School of Architecture and hear from a
practicing architect. Work from
blueprints to building models of your own design as you build your artist’s
portfolio.
