Free Family Day at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art Explores Oregon’s Landscapes, Seascapes and Vistas

EUGENE, Ore. -- (March 27, 2017) –  The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, located on the University of Oregon campus, invites families to spend a day at the museum enjoying free activities at “Landscape, Seascapes and Vistas” on Saturday, April 15, from noon to 3 p.m. Sponsored by Kendall Auto Group and Imagination International Inc., this free event is inspired by the exhibition “Pour It On! Watercolors from the West.”

“We’re excited to invite families to enjoy art making activities that focus on watercolor techniques and experience performances that highlight the diversity of our beautiful Oregon environment” says Sherri Jones, JSMA museum education program coordinator.

Activities include creating torn paper landscapes, wax resist watercolor landscapes, and watercolor activities with University of Oregon athletes from the JSMA’s Art of the Athlete program. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience a 30-minute studio session with artist Linda Rothchild Ollis to create watercolor seascapes. These will take place every half hour.  A similar project with a shorter time frame that is geared toward younger children will take place throughout the event.

Performances throughout the day include storytelling with Cynthia Olsen from the Eugene Public Library, TRUE – The Ridgeline Ukulele Extravaganza, and “Artistique Vistas” performed by Ballet Fanstastique.

Prior to the start of Family Day, the JSMA will be hosting an opening reception for the artists featured in this year’s NewArt Northwest Kids exhibition. This year’s theme is “The Language of Art” and features artwork from regional k – 12 students. The public is invited to celebrate the artists at a free reception from 11 a.m. to noon.

“In the ten years since we began ‘NewArt Northwest Kids,’ we’ve been honored to celebrate the art created by students in our community,” says Lisa Abia-Smith, JSMA Director of Education. “This year’s theme has allowed students to represent themselves not only artistically but linguistically as well.”
