Celebrations Around the World are Part of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art’s Free Family Day

EUGENE, Ore. -- (November 22, 2016)  - The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art invites families to spend a day at the museum enjoying free activities at “Celebrations Around the World” on Saturday, December 3, from noon to 3 p.m. on the University of Oregon campus.  This free family day will be filled with art activities for children of all ages and will be inspired by celebrations and artistic traditions from around the world.

“We invite families to spend the day viewing and creating art together,” say Arthurina Fears, JSMA Manager of Museum education Programs. “This is a great opportunity to explore the museum’s galleries, enjoy performances, storytelling, and learn about cross-cultural connections.“

Art making activities include drawing manga and creating origami with Imagination International, Inc., learning calligraphy with the Confucius Institute, and making Chinese New Year Dragons with Global Perspectives for Youth. Guests can create holiday cards and Ex Votos with Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art staff and volunteers. On the River Road Park Imagination Bus, parked near 15th and Kincaid outside the museum, families can create miniature paper lanterns.

Performances throughout the day include storytelling and singing with Taylor Worley from the Springfield Public Library, a puppet performance by the JSMA Dragon Puppet Theatre, and Charrería (skillful roping) performance by Antonio Huerta. A family-friendly museum tour is offered in English and Spanish.

Family Day: Celebrations Around the World is sponsored by Imagination International, Inc., Oregon Health Insurance Marketplace, the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies, Confucius Institute, and the Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence.
