Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art Hosts Free Outdoor Screening of the Academy Award-Nominated “The Boy and the World”

EUGENE, Ore. -- (July 21, 2016) –  The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art invites you to a free outdoor screening of Brazilian artist Alê Abreu's Academy Award-nominated masterpiece “The Boy and the World” at the University of Oregon Memorial Quad on Wednesday, August 3, at 8:30 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, family and friends! Free non-alcoholic beverages will be provided.

“The Boy and the World” is  Abreu’s second animated feature and is an explosion of music and color, a breathtakingly original and vibrant cinematic experience that depicts the wonders and struggles of the modern world as seen through the eyes of a young boy. The wordless narrative is accompanied throughout by a rich soundscape of pan-flute, samba, and Brazilian hip-hop.

The story focuses on Cuca, a boy who goes in search of his missing dad. The young boy’s journey unfolds like a tapestry, the animation taking on greater complexity as his small world expands. Entering civilization, industrial landscapes are inhabited by animal-machines, with barrios of decoupage streets and shop windows and flashing neon advertisements that illuminate the night. The story depicts a clash between village and city, hand crafted and mechanized, rich and poor – and throughout the tumult, the heart and soul of the people beats on as a song.

The JSMA's Outdoor Family Film is sponsored by the Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and UO Summer Session. In the event of rain, the program will be moved inside the museum.
