“Matinée sur la Seine, effet de brume” by Impressionist Painter Claude Monet is on view at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

The painting is on view through mid-June in the MacKinnon Gallery of European Art

EUGENE, Ore. -- (April 14, 2015) – “Matinée sur la Seine, effet de brume” or “Morning on the Seine, fog effect” by Impressionist painter Claude Monet is on view through mid-June at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon campus.

The painting is one of a series of twenty-one paintings depicting the river Seine near his home in Giverny, France. As with his other series paintings (of Rouen Cathedral, poplars, haystacks, and his beloved water lily pond), Monet’s aim was to capture the effect of changing light at different times of the day and across the seasons. To create this work, Monet rose at 3:30 to be on the river just before dawn in a flat-bottomed boat he had outfitted as a painting studio.

Although he began the project in 1896, bad weather caused delays, and it took him almost a year to finish. The entire series of paintings was exhibited to great acclaim at Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, in June 1898.

The work is on view in the MacKinnon Gallery of European Art as part of the JSMA’s Masterworks on Loan program. Also on view are works by Josef Albers, Helen Frankenthaler, Roy Lichtenstein, Amedeo Modigliani, Gerhard Richter, Joaquin Sorolla, among others.
