Schnitzer Cinema

Two films by Manfred Kirchheimer: "Stations of the Elevated" and "Claw: A Fable"
Wed, 02/08/2017 - 7:00pm

Newly restored, Manfred Kirchheimer’s Stations of the Elevated (1981, 45 minutes) is a jazzy city symphony that captures the height of the graffiti movement, showcasing images of subway cars tagged by legends like Blade, Daze, Lee, and many others. By juxtaposing this self-expressive imagery with shots of hand-painted corporate billboard advertising of the day, Stations challenges our traditional ideas of urban art and the use of public space.  Preceded by Kirchheimer’s Claw: A Fable (1968, 30 minutes), which bores into the ill effects of urban renewal and destruction. Schnitzer Cinema is made possible in part by UO’s Office of Academic Affairs.
