Día de los Muertos

Thu, 10/30/2014 - 6:00pm to 9:00pm

Octavio Bajonero, Sin título (Untitled), 2005, Xilografía (Woodblock print)

Each of the four nights of this annual celebration will include dancing, poetry, and live music by El Son del Montón, a special exhibition of works by contemporary artists from Guanajuato, Mexico, and workshops in the art studio with Mexican ceramic artists Martín, Blas, and Ernesto Guevara. An ofrenda, constructed by local students to celebrate the holiday, will be on view October 29-November 2. This year, a community ofrenda will be added to the displays - community members are encouraged to bring photos or non-valuable items to celebrate their loved ones.  Note: Items left on the community alter will not be returned.

“Tzompantli y otros huesos” (“Skulls and other Bones”),  a collective installation of Mexican graphic works by artists at the Taller de Gráfica del Centro de los Artes Guanajunto, will be on view in the Ford Lecture Hall. In addition to the event times, the public is encouraged to visit the art and the ofrendas during museum hours between October 29 and November 2.

The event is co-sponsored by Oak Hill School in conjunction with MEChA de UO, Adelante Sí, el Instituto de Cultura de Guanajuato, and el Istituto Estatal de Migrante Guanajuatense y sus familias.
