Named in recognition of Gordon Gilkey (1912-2000) the JSMA’s study center is an intimate space for the display and storage of works on paper. Accessible to the public and scholars for the study of works on paper including prints, drawings, and photographs.  In 1936, Gilkey was the first student at the University of Oregon to receive a Master of Fine Arts degree.  His artistic talents and skill were quickly recognized, when he was selected from a national pool of candidates to document the 1939 World’s Fair in New York as the official artist. The Second World War interrupted his career, and during his military service he became instrumental in repatriating stolen artwork in Europe. Following the war, he became head of the Art Department at Oregon State University, and eventually that university’s dean of the College of Liberal Arts.  Retiring from education, Gilkey was appointed the curator of prints and drawing at the Portland Art Museum.
