Japanese Art
Fay Boyer Preble and Virginia Cooke Murphy GalleriesTraditional Japanese aesthetic sensibilities balance bold colors, abstract patterns, and refined elegance with an appreciation for simplicity. The Fay Boyer Preble and Virginia Cooke Murphy Murphy Galleries examine both of these tendencies, focusing in particular on the artistic dimensions of everyday objects and on the representation of everyday life as a subject for art. Among the works on view are country textiles (including a lumberman’s jacket and a selection of wrapping cloths), Momoyama period armor, Buddhist painting, ceramics, netsuke (clothing toggles), and lacquerware (letter boxes, combs, and more). Selections representative of the museum’s strong collection of ukiyo-e are also on display.
