THE ART OF SEEING AND WELL-BEING
Provence Through the Eyes of Cézanne, Leo Marchutz, and Art Heals

June 9 – 15, 2027
A bespoke Art Heals journey for friends of the
UO Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

Slow down. Look closely. Create. Connect.

Join the University of Oregon's Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, in collaboration with the Leo Marchutz School of Painting & Drawing, for a rare, intimate journey through Provence and the French Riviera where encounters with art and landscape become opportunities for reflection, creativity, and well-being.

Created especially for friends of JSMA, this journey places the museum’s Art Heals initiative at its heart. Guided by the ARCC Framework (Attention, Reflection, Creation, and Connection) we will look slowly at works of art, listen to poetry, respond through writing and optional drawing or watercolor, and share discoveries with one another.

The landscapes that inspired Cézanne, Van Gogh, the artistic philosophy of Leo Marchutz, and the luminous spaces of Provence will shape our daily experiences. In museums, studios, gardens, and historic villages, we will make time to notice, explore, and be present to art, to ourselves, and to one another.

No artistic experience is necessary. Only curiosity and a willingness to explore.

A FEW HIGHLIGHTS

Cézanne’s Provence
Discover Aix-en-Provence and the places that shaped Cézanne’s vision, including Jas de Bouffan, Atelier Cézanne, Châteaunoir, and Mont Sainte-Victoire. Guided observation, watercolor, and writing will deepen our engagement with the landscapes he studied.

Art Heals in Museums and Landscapes
Experience specially designed Art Heals workshops at the Musée Granet, Hôtel de Caumont Centre d’Art, and in the landscape itself. Slow looking, poetry, creative responses, and conversation will invite personal reflection and shared connection.

Learning to See with Marchutz
Spend time with the Leo Marchutz School of Painting & Drawing, exploring a philosophy grounded in sustained observation and artistic discovery. This collaboration brings Marchutz’s approach to seeing into dialogue with Art Heals’ practices for creativity and well-being.

Art, Architecture, and Place
Explore Château La Coste, where sculpture, architecture, and landscape offer rich possibilities for looking, reflection, and conversation.

The French Riviera
Visit Vence and Saint-Paul-de-Vence, including Matisse’s extraordinary Chapelle du Rosaire. Consider how color, light, beauty, and contemplative spaces shape our experience of well-being.

AN EXTRAORDINARY STAY AT LA COLOMBE D’OR

An opportunity to stay at the hotel La Colombe d’Or in Saint-Paul-de-Vence offers a memorable setting for the journey’s final reflections. This unique hotel has long been a gathering place for artists, writers, and cultural figures including Picasso, Calder, Miro, and Leger. Here, we will share discoveries from our time together and consider how to carry the practices of attention, creativity, and connection into everyday life.

TRAVEL WITH ATTENTION. RETURN WITH CONNECTION.

Led by Lisa Abia-Smith, JSMA Chief Curator of Education and founder of Art Heals, and collaborators from the Leo Marchutz School of Painting & Drawing, Alan Roberts, Artistic Director of the Leo Marchutz School of Painting & Drawing (LMSP&D), Rose Genochio, Executive Director of the LMSP&D, and Cathleen Keenan, Director of Outreach and Atelier Libre at the LMSP&D, the journey blends art history, museum experiences, watercolor practice, writing, and reflective engagement.

BONUS DAY (optional add-on experience)

For an additional $550 participants can add on an excursion to Saint-Paul-de-Vence on June 16th, with transportation included. In the morning participants will be invited to visit Matisse’s famous Chapelle du Rosaire. Through the architecture, color, and light of the chapel, participants will reflect on how beauty, contemplation, and place contribute to healing and human flourishing. They will spend the afternoon exploring the village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence and celebrate together at a final group dinner before checking in for their last night at La Colombe d’Or (lodging not included). Participants who decide to add on the extra day will depart on June 17th, according to their own travel arrangements.
