Art by National and International Contemporary Artists included in “The Human Touch” at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon

Drawn from the RBC Wealth Management Collection, the exhibition is on view from April 26 to September 14, 2014

EUGENE, Ore. -- (March 25, 2014) – “The Human Touch: Selections from the RBC Wealth Management Collection” will be on display at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art from April 26 to September 14, 2014. The exhibition, drawn from the RBC Wealth Management Art Collection, features 40 major works by international contemporary artists, all of which explore creative interpretations of the human figure and celebrate people and diversity.

The exhibition opens with a free, public reception on Friday, April 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. On Saturday, April 26, at 2 p.m., T. L. Solien, one of the artists in The Human Touch” presents an artist's talk.  An exhibition tour with Solien, exhibition curator Don McNeil, and JSMA executive director Jill Hartz follows.

"We are so pleased to partner with RBC Wealth Management on this exhibition," says Jill Hartz, executive director of the JSMA and in- house curator of the exhibition.  "All of the artists selected for our presentation are among the finest and most thought provoking in the world today.  We are excited to introduce many of them to our community for the first time and to give students a rare opportunity to see how these works were constructed in person."

Ranging in scale and media, these whimsical, provocative, beautiful, and unusual pieces include works by Radcliffe Bailey, John Baldessari, Chuck Close, Lalla Essaydi, Roland Fischer, Dinh Q. Lê, Roy Lichtenstein, Hung Liu, Elizabeth Peyton, T.L. Solien, and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith.  Created over the past twenty years, the RBC collection is regularly displayed at the firm's headquarters in Minneapolis; because of its continued growth, now numbering more than 400 pieces, selection of the collection are able to be shared with the public through the company’s touring program.

“The earliest known drawings and sculptures depicted human and animal figures,” notes Don McNeil, curator of the collection and exhibition. “These artistic expressions centered on matters most important to early man - success in the hunt and fertility. As society evolved, the human figure maintained its importance in artistic endeavors and is the major focal point in artistic expression to this day."

Whether a striking realistic portrait or a figural study of the human body, the works in the exhibition probe the depths of the individual psyche, while offering an intimate investigation of the human condition.

“RBC Wealth Management has a long- term commitment to stewardship, and we constantly strive to strengthen our relationships through our giving programs, volunteerism and charitable sponsorships,” said John Taft, CEO of RBC Wealth Management, U.S. “By bringing “The Human Touch” to Oregon we have the unique opportunity to share our support of the arts with our clients, friends and community members.”

The Human Touch is made possible by RBC Wealth Management. Additional support for the exhibition is provided by the Coeta and Donald Barker Special Exhibitions Endowment, The Harold and Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation, a grant from the Oregon Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and JSMA members.
