The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and Adelante Si host international exhibition of the work of Capelo
The works are on display in the JSMA’s South Hallway through November 21, 2009

Eugene, Ore. (Oct. 28, 2009)- A new installation of work by the Mexican artist Javier Hernández Capelo, known as Capelo, is on view at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art through November 21,  2009.  This exhibition is sponsored by Adelante Si Hispanic Organization of Lane County and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.

Capelo, an artist who uses various mediums of art to express himself, is best known for his mastery in majolica, a soft earthenware ceramic, with a flair for composition and color. The ten works on display are watercolor and ink on paper and were all created in 2009.

The inspiration for his artwork, in regards to scenes depicted, color schemes, mediums, and textures used in his work, comes from the natural beauty of his home in Guanajuato, Mexico. His love for nature and horses are a major source of inspiration for him as well.

Much of his art is influenced from works of the past, while still containing a contemporary perspective.  His designs are inspired by 13th century Spanish colonial ceramic forms and designs, and his style incorporates a mixture of a painter’s approach to art, with an architect’s desire for function.

Capelo had his work on display in 2004 at the downtown Eugene Public Library for Fiesta Latina, and worked with local high school students to create a mural at the Emerald Art Center.

Capelo works as a teacher of design, drawing and lithography at the School of Plastic Arts at the University of Guanajuatio in Mexico.
